The Phone Store

T-Mobile. Eighteen years old. My first real job with a floor and a quota and a manager, and the manager was a guy named Steve who did something to me I did not forgive for about a year.

He kept me in training an extra month. Everybody else graduated onto the sales floor and I stayed in the back, handling every angry customer who walked through the door. Billing disputes. Broken screens. People who had been on hold with corporate for two hours before they ever got to me. I hated it. I thought I was being punished and I said so.

It made me lethal. A month of people at their worst teaches something no sales script has ever taught anybody, which is how to stay calm while the person across the counter is not. By the time I got on the floor I had already heard every objection a human being can produce. Then I did the other thing nobody was doing. I read every phone manual front to back, every model on the wall, so I could teach instead of push. I did not have a name for it then. I call it EduSales now.

Three months later I was top three out of three hundred salespeople in the tri-state, at eighteen, against grown adults with families and a decade of experience on me. Nine months in I had made six figures in commissions. Nobody on that floor cared how old I was once the board went up. Steve never explained himself and I never asked him to. The month I hated is the only reason there was ever a number next to my name.
